I really wanted to have a good experience at Muse Natural Spa, especially because this Groupon was given to me as a gift from my friends. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a relaxing experience ended up being extremely frustrating and uncomfortable. First, simply trying to make an appointment was unnecessarily difficult. We called multiple times and could barely get anyone to answer the phone. Eventually, because the Groupon was close to expiring and we had no idea when someone would actually answer, we decided to drive there in person to make the appointment. Even after explaining how many times we had tried calling, they kept trying to schedule us for another day. We were firm about wanting to come that same day because of the expiration, and after going back and forth, they finally agreed to give us a 4:00 PM appointment. We booked the appointment around 1:00 PM and planned our day around 4:00. Then, strangely, they started repeatedly calling us asking us to come at 3:30, then 3:45, after initially making it seem like fitting us in at 4:00 was so difficult. I will give credit where it is due: the actual massage was very good, and I genuinely enjoyed it. Unfortunately, everything that happened afterward completely ruined what should have been a relaxing experience. After the massage, the employee became extremely pushy about tipping and was demanding a 20–30% tip, explaining that the regular massage costs around $90 and that the massage therapists do not make enough money without tips. I found this incredibly inappropriate and unprofessional. I have no problem tipping for good service, and I normally do. However, a tip is a gratuity. It is not a mandatory fee. Customers should never be argued with, pressured, guilted, or made uncomfortable because an employee believes they should receive a certain percentage. If there is a mandatory service charge or gratuity, that should be clearly disclosed upfront as part of the price not demanded from a customer after the service is finished. As college students, money is already tight, especially with the cost of everything right now. We came with a Groupon that had already been PAID FOR and was given as a gift. How the business chooses to compensate its employees should not become the customer’s responsibility through pressure or confrontation after the service. What made the situation even worse was that instead of allowing us to explain ourselves, the employee continued arguing and then literally showed us the door and told us to leave. I could not believe that a customer who had just finished receiving a service could be treated that way over a tip. We were also charged approximately $3 each in tax because we were told Groupon does not collect the tax. I have purchased and used Groupons for many different businesses and experiences over the years, including massages, facials, attractions, water parks, and even automotive services, and I have never experienced treatment like this. The massage itself was enjoyable, which makes this even more disappointing. We came there to use a gift from our friends, relax, and have a nice experience. Instead, we left feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed, and completely disrespected because of what happened afterward. Customers should never be harassed or pressured into leaving a specific tip. If a certain amount is mandatory, then include it in the advertised price and disclose it before the service. Otherwise, gratuity should remain exactly what it is: optional and at the customer’s discretion. Unfortunately, the way we were treated at the end completely overshadowed the quality of the massage. This was extremely unprofessional customer service and not how paying customers should be treated.
